The aim of the project is to develop a decision support tool for municipal waste management systems based on optimisation modelling and the deployment of innovative technologies; focusing on efficiency and sustainability improvements.

The role of the iimt is to create an innovation support process bolstering uptake and diffusion of waste management innovation in Swiss municipalities; with the process being based on insights from Transition Studies.

Since the project’s start in October 2019, an initial dataset on historic instances of failed innovation uptakes was collected by the iimt and Schwendimann AG, leading to the development of an Transition Studies-based assessment matrix aimed at identifying innovation barriers in municipalities. First results from the dataset were successfully submitted in working paper form to the STS Graz 2021 conference.
