Optimization of the efficiency of sedimentation tanks in water treatment plants

The primary settling ponds of sewage treatment plants are used for the mechanical treatment of waste water. A slow, low-turbulence flow promotes sedimentation of solids. The outlet design has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sedimentation tanks.

The use of a piano key weir instead of a sharp-edged weir can improve the effectiveness of the settling basin (volume reduction for new facilities, increased flow capacity for existing facilities) and reduce the flow energy required. Digital simulations and design tests support this hypothesis.
